A multi-vehicle accident on Interstate-295 in Westampton Township resulted in several injuries and a police search for two people who went missing after the crash.
The scary auto accident occurred a short time after midnight on I-295, near Exit 45 in Westampton, New Jersey. The multi-car crash was initially a single-vehicle accident, with a Nissan Versa reportedly slamming into a deer on the highway and subsequently coming to a stop in the middle of the road.
What happened next seemed unreal: car after car crashed into each other, with six cars ultimately colliding on the roadway. Making matters worse for those involved: one of the drivers got out of their vehicle upon crashing and attempted to provide assistance to an injured motorist, only to be struck by another car.
Afterwards, several motorists dialed 911 to alert law enforcement. New Jersey State Police troopers and emergency medical responders soon arrived at the scene of the accident. Emergency medical crews briefly treated four people who sustained injuries in the crash and then transported three of those people to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ. The good news is that none of the people injured in the accident required overnight hospitalization and none of their injuries were considered life threatening.
NJ State Police closed down a large section of the southbound lanes on I-295 and directed vehicles toward the shoulder of the highway.
While this was going on, police learned that two occupants of cars involved in the motor vehicle accident were no longer at the scene. Police officers canvassed the area on foot and even utilized a helicopter to try to locate the individuals. Although the motorists may have violated the law by leaving the scene of the accident, it was unclear if they would actually be charged with a criminal offense or cited for a traffic violation.
Also unclear at this time is whether any of the drivers will be issued traffic tickets in connection with the surreal multi-vehicle accident. Additionally, it will be interesting to see if any other injured motorists will ultimately decide to file a personal injury lawsuit against the other drivers involved in the crash. The reality is that this is always a possibility when a car accident occurs on a New Jersey roadway, which is why it is absolutely crucial that anyone involved in an auto accident exercise caution and avoid making any official statements until first speaking with a knowledgeable traffic accident lawyer.
